4003 Persian Gabbeh 4ft x 6ft (122 x 183)

4003 Persian Gabbeh, mid 2oth century

The original so-called “Gabbeh” carpets of the second to third quarter of the 20th century such as this example, are a wonderful example of indiginous art from the tribes that roam the mountains of Iran in search of grazing areas for their flocks.

The materials used in creating these modernist seeming pieces are natural Dye and undyed wool, mixed in with an occasional color dye that was traded for. These carpets also often feature goat hair in the foundation and/or fringe which was said to keep snakes away from the tents.

In this particular rug, the classic “checkerboard” design is rendered in a harmonious blend of color that shows off the artistry of the weaver.
