A Workshop to Demystify Persian Rugs

Ziegler Mahal RugHow to tell Good, Better, Best and Junk when looking at hand made carpets.

Curious about the antique Persian rugs Grandma left you? Want to make intelligent choices when picking out your own floor coverings? Come join an industry expert as he guides you through the ins and outs of buying and selling fine rugs.

We will start off this experience with some cheese and wine to socialize and relax. Then we will enter the Nemati Collection Showroom where our host Darius Nemati, industry expert will cover a wide range of topics but not limited to:

  • How to balance quality/condition/price/esthetics and the inherent limitations when using antique carpets
  • When does it make sense to use “reproductions”?
  • The vast new market of contemporary rugs – where are the pitfalls, some basic quality standards
  • How to sensibly mix contemporary and antique carpets in the same home
  • The proper cleaning and maintenance of fine rugs
  • Is this rug worth fixing? We will look at some examples and go over how to determine whether something is worth restoring.

Participants are encouraged to bring in snapshots of their damaged rugs to evaluate as well.

Nemati – Traditional to Radical

ZThe Nemati Collection

Uncommon Traditional to the Avant Garde

The Nemati Collection, a New York gallery that has served the international design community for close
to fifty years will be showing an eclectic and enticing assemblage of vintage and antique oriental rugs
and tapestries at the Antiques + Modernism Winnetka Show October 19-21 at the Winnetka Community
House, Winnetka IL.

Featured will be traditional pieces that are exemplary examples of their type, as well as some creative
Art Deco, Art Nouveaux, and modernist pieces that showcase what can be done when the imagination is
allowed to re-interpret what a rug or tapestry looks like.

The emphasis for this presentation will be on the 19th and 20th century, although an older piece or two
may be presented for historical reference.

Art of the Shag

Tulu Rug
7953 TULU – 3ft10in x 5ft 2in  (117cm x 155cm)

Years ago, Nemati Collection hosted an exhibition titled, Art of the Shag, that featured long haired carpets of all sorts: Persian, Finnish, Swedish, Moroccan, and of course, probably the original “Shag” rug, the Tulu carpets of Turkey.

Tulu carpets have been woven around Konya, Turkey for centuries, but the bulk of our collection of these magnificently soft carpets are from the middle of the 20th century.  A good number of the pieces we collected and are now proud to display are woven using undyed wool accented with a few strands of dyed wool that is how each weaver signed their work.

It is worth searching through our vast selection of Tulu carpets to be exposed to a wonderfully modern design aesthetic produced by craftspeople practicing a centuries old art form.
